Jordan national football team started their participation in the FIFA World Cup with a 1-3 loss to Austria in the opening match of Group 10, on Tuesday evening local time, in the first round of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, currently held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Jordanian team was a match for their Austrian counterpart in many periods of the match, but the lack of experience of their players in such major events, and their committing of silly mistakes, prevented them from achieving a positive result in the match. Austria scored the first goal through Romano Schmid in the 20th minute, before Ali Alwan scored the equalizing goal for the Jordanian team in the 50th minute, scoring the first goal for the (Al-Shamal) team in its first appearance in the World Cup. The second goal for Austria, which participated for the eighth time in the World Cup and the first time in 28 years, came through (friendly fire), after Yezan Al-Arab scored the second goal for the European team in the 76th minute by mistake in his own goal, while Marco Arnautovic scored the third goal in the 12th minute of the added time instead of the lost second half from a penalty kick. With this result, Austria secured their first 3 points in their group, in second place, with a goal difference behind Argentina (the leader), who tied with them in the same score, after their 3-0 win over Algeria in the same round. In contrast, the Jordanian team remained without points. Jordan will face their Algerian counterpart in an Arab confrontation in the second round of the group, which will witness another confrontation between Austria and Argentina. It is worth noting that the 48 participating teams in the World Cup were distributed into 12 groups, with 4 teams in each group, with the winner and runner-up qualifying for the knockout rounds, in addition to the best 8 teams that finished third.
