Badou Zaki takes charge of Jordan after Al-Salami exit

Five days before Jamal Al-Salami’s contract expired, the Jordan Football Association announced on Sunday 19 July 2026 that Badou Zaki would take over as head coach of the national team Al-Nashama, replacing Al-Salami. The move follows Jordan’s first-round exit at 2026 FIFA World Cup with three consecutive defeats-against Austria, Algeria and defending champions Argentina. How Zaki landed in Amman

Zaki, 67, is a seasoned coach whose playing career saw him keep goal for Morocco at 1986 World Cup, guiding the Atlas Lions into the Round of 16 as the first Arab and African side to reach that stage. He was named African Footballer of the Year the same year. He later coached Morocco twice (2002–2005 and 2014–2016), reaching the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations final, and also led Sudan in 2023 and Niger from 2023 to 2026. The Jordan FA said Zaki would name his technical staff at his discretion.

The deal comes at a low point for Al-Nashama, who have now suffered five straight defeats, most recently a 1–3 loss to Argentina on 28 June 2026.
